John Flaver Jr.
Clarinet teacher
My father and I had the good fortune to study with Anthony. My father studied with him during the early 1960’s, and I studied with him from 1966 to 1973.
Through my affiliation with the New York State School Music Association, I was able to engage Anthony as a soloist and clinician in 1992 in Syracuse and in 2000 in Rochester.
Most recently, while I was guest conducting an all-county middle school honor band in Rome, NY, I dedicated one of the band’s selections, the Adagio from Rachmaninov’s Second Symphony, in Anthony’s memory. This Symphony was Anthony’s signature piece with the Philadelphia Orchestra, having recorded it on four occasions during his tenure with the orchestra.
Musically, John Flaver Jr.
John Flaver Jr. was honored as the best teacher of the State of New York. His father used to drive 5 hours each way on Sundays from New York to Philadelphia for his lessons with Anthony. They managed to spend time with Anthony every year in Saratoga or Jersey Shore for all the years they knew each other. John’s commitment to clarinet and excellence in teaching are the best tribute to Anthony.
